PUBLICITY METHODS
Busy Year For Department
N.Z. FILMS AND BOOKLETS Figures recently compiled by the Government Publicity Department show that to the end of July of this year nearly 110,000 copies of various publicity booklets were issued to internal bureaux, agents and overseas oflicers. Private applications for booklets were dealt with to the number of 5000,
Incidentally, since these figures were compiled, a further 10.000 copies of a booklet specially designed for distribution in the East have been dispatched, a -large majority going to individual addresses. The internal distribution of booklets accounted for 40.000.
All figures, which represent an increase of about 20 per cent, on any previous period of similar length, exclude maps and posters, of which several thousands were distributed.
In the period February-July, no fewer than 34,130 whole-plate photographic prints were sent out, either to maintain agents’ and bureaux stocks or to the Press or in response to requests. More than 100 new negatives were added to the department’s stock. S5O enlargements, either coloured or black and white, were used, and 3000 slides were provided to assist lecturers overseas.
Four new film "shorts” of scenic subjects were made, while the negatives of two others of a more topical nature —one in connection with the Jubilee celebrations, the other depicting the All Black football team and their home districts—were sent to Britain for printing and exhibition. All these were sound-synchronised. In addition to already existing stocks, about 60 more Somm.-sized prints were placed in circulation on board ships. A total of 44 prints was sold to a well-known firm of distributors for circulation in six Eastern countries, thereby securing far wider publicity than could have been hoped from distribution by the department itself. Some 150 prints of 16-millimetre film were made both for loan to lecturers and to non-theatrical circuits such as sports clubs, universities and schools. In addition, much material in the form of Maori objets d’art, mounted trout, life-size and smaller cut-outs, coloured photographic transparencies, etc., has been supplied both internally and abroad for exhibition purposes, window displays, and loan to travel agents.
