BRIGHTER CRICKET
Extension of Hours and
Higher Points
The’movement for brighter cricket was discussed at some length last night at the annual meeting of members of the Midland Cricket Club. Tho club delegates to the annual meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association were left to use their own discretion about the extension of hours of play and tho increasing of points for outright wins, and were instructed to support tho setting aside of two definite days for each match. The association advised that it intended to put before the annual meeting of club delegates a proposal to make the hours of play from 1.45 to 6.45, and to increase the points for an outright win from eight to 10.
The earlier, hour of starting was opposed on the ground that it would be inconvenient for those whose employment kept'them engaged till one o’clock, and that it would be difficult for players having to travel to “outside” games. It was defended by another player, who said that if the official starting time was 1.45, the game would actually be under way by 2 o’clock. The later finishing time, it was suggested, would “cut into tbe evenings’’ of the players, especially those engaged on outside grounds. The increasing of the points for an outright win would encourage captains to endeavour to finish a match, it was stated. The association also advised that it proposed to fix two Saturdays for each game instead of allowing two playing Saturdays. This, it was explained, would mean that if rain stopped play on the first Saturday, the game would have to be finished on the second Saturday. The delegates were instructed to support this proposal.
