RAILWAY OFFICERS

Annual Conference of Institute

OPENING THIS MORNING

The General Manager of Railways, Mr. G. H. Mackley, will open the annual conference of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute executive council in Wellington this morning. The assistant - general manager, Mr. E. Casey, will also be present. The order paper contains no fewer than 93 remits on questions affecting the members of the institute. Among the remits are a number from branches urging that the institute press for tlio full restoration of the salary cuts “in view of the steady Improvement in railway finances.”

The annual report records a membership of the institute of 2563, compared with 2546 last year. Satisfaction is expressed that the Minister of Finance had expressed the opinion that there should be no-alteration to the Superannuation Act without the consent of both parties to the contract. The question still required close watching, however, and any attacks that infringed the rights of members would be resisted. The executive committee had actively associated itselfcwith the combined Public Service in efforts to obtain a further restoration of salary reductions. • •

The balance-sheet shows that income for the year exceeded expenditure by £436. Remittances from branches amounted to £1985. compared with £1963 for the previous year, an increase of £22. ■ ‘

The retirement of the general secretary, Mr. R. Hampton, on superannuation is announced in the report.

The president, Mr. V. R. J. Stanley, will preside. The delegates will be :— Messrs. C. IT. Bray (Auckland). J. W. Shepherd (South Auckland), L. V. Carmine (Main Trunk). J. E. Rosonuin (Wanganui). A.
