DUELLISTS FINED
Two Melbourne Students Melbourne, June 24, The two students, S. J. von Ingwersen and P. Lalor, who fought a duel on June 20, were fined £1 each for a breach of the regulations governing the conduct of students by the vice-chan-cellor. A cable message dated June 20 stated that to avenge his honour after he had been expelled from the Melbourne University Conservative Club, Stanislaus Josef von Ingwersen, a descendant of a nobie Danish family, fought a duel with Peter Lalor, a great-grandson of the Eureka Stockade hero. Lalor had moved a motion for Ingwersen’s expulsion, and Ingwersen regarded this as a stain upon his honour and challenged Lalor to a duel with foils. Clad in cloaks, and accompanied by seconds, an umpire, and a surgeon, the duellists fought until Lalor stumbled and Ingwersen’s foil gashed his ear. The contestants then shook hands and retired t.o drink coffee.
The registrar, .Mr. J. P. Bainbridge, stated that no official notice would be taken of the affair, which was regarded as a joke.
