THE SOCIAL ROUND

Bridge Party For Smith Family Fresh cream walls, glowing with the concealed light from ceiling and mural lamps, big, scarlet-framed mirrors reflecting the red-shaded standing lamps, and hydrangeas, red and white and long-stemmed, formed a striking contrast with the graceful palms in the palm lounge of the Hotel St. George, which was the scene yesterday afternoon of a most successful bridge party organised to assist the funds of the Smith Family. The deep armchairs and electric fires added to the atmosphere of comfort, and there was a cheerful buzz of conversation over Ute delicious tea that was served between rubbers. Mrs. B. B. Wood thanked the players for helping the Smith Family, and said the proceeds would go toward the purchase of wool. This wool will be given free to anyone who will knit garments for the Smith Family. In conjunction with this a competition is being held. Two prizes, of 10/- each, will be given for the best babies’ garments knitted by girls of 15 years of age or under, and two other prizes, also of 10/- each, are open to anyone over 15 years of age for children’s garments. Already more than one hundred garments had been handed in, Mrs. Wood said, and as the result of any appeal people had sent from all over the country for wool. She mentioned that the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union in Plcton had sent for a large quantity of wool to knit. Mrs. Wood concluded by thanking Mr. Bassant for his generosity in lending the palm lounge for the party, and announced that the knitting competition would close on July 22.
