THE SOCIAL ROUND
Combined Banks’ Ball It was very pleasant to walk in from the cold blast to the cheer of St. Francis Hall, ablaze with amber lights, last evening, and to meet with the friendly spirit that always prevails at one of the most popular dances of the season, the combined banks’ ball. Au ever-changing spotlight twirled in the centre of the room, throwing broken arcs of light on the dancers and over the walls. The stage w.as outlined with amber lights and hung with rich red velvet curtains, and the whitejacketed orchestra played in front of a backcloth of a charming New Zealand scene. A corner of the ballroom had been furnished with a carpet and comfortable chairs for the hostesses, and electric heaters radiated a warm glow over the room.
The long tables in the supper-room were decorated with yellow jonquils, Iceland poppies and birch in spreading, three-branch silver epergnes, and. the supper was a “sit-down” one, with even orange and lemon jellies to match the colour scheme.
