HUTT VALLEY NEWS
Reference to the recent death of Mr. G. H. Chapman was made at the meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, remarking that the district had suffered a very severe loss. Mr. Chapman had done excellent work for the borough, particularly in connection with Riddiford Park. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect.
A motion of congratulation to Sir Alfred Ransom upon the honour conferred on him by the King was passed at the meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night. The Mayor. Mr. J. W. Andrews, remarked: “We should bo proud of the fact that an old Hutt boy has been so honoured.”
A committee consisting of the Mayor, Mr. J W. Andrews, and Crs. C. J. Ashton. J. Mitchell and W. B. Rainey, was set up by the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night to co-operate with the Petone Borough Council on matters of mutual interest. During last month 19 building permits to the value of £7613 were issued by the Lower Hutt Borough Council, compared with 18 permits to the value of £3104 for the corresponding month last year. Of last month's permits issued 10 were for dwellings (£6993). “You-will notice the figures are still healthy,” commented the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, at the meeting of the council last night. A suggestion that a notice, “Citizens Protect Your Own Property," should be erected at Moera to protect the reserve, was made by Cr. P. Dowse at last night s meeting of . the Lower Hutt Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews: “We have had three notices there, and as you know, these notices make pretty good firewood.”
