THE SOCIAL ROUND

Assault-at-Arms Last evening at the London Gymnasium an assault-at-arms was held between the training ship Durham, under Lieut Wakeford, R.N.R., and a representative team from Wellington under Miss Zena Clarke A.B.A.P.T. (fene.). The salle d’armes was deeorated with bunting, and with the fencers in their smart fighting attire presented a very gay scene. Four different badges were prominent —the Durhams, Victoria College, R.N.V.R. and the Wellington Swords Club, and the foil and sabre matches were as thrilling to the onlookers as they must have been to the fighters. • ' ; ; Among those who had been invited to witness the play were'Capt. Thespians’ Reading The play read last evening by the Thespians, at their usual weekly meeting, was “Badger’s Green,” a light comedy by R. 0. Sherriff, the famous author of “Journey’s End.” Though “Badger’s Green” is not as great a play as its author’s more famous work, it does not pretend to be anything more than a light entertainment, and as such it succeeded admirably last evening, the large audience thoroughly enjoying the performance. Members who took part were: Misses Frame, E. Hadfield, Molly Meinhold and Ruth Skerman, and Messrs. T. V. Anson, D. G. Edwards, Harry Painter, W. L. S. Brittain, Reg. Larkin, Noel Cathie and Norman Hannah. The reading to be given next Monday evening will be “Eight Bells,” a sea play by Percy' Mandley. Party at Titahi Bay A very pleasant party was given by Lieut.-Colonel and Mrs. ’R. McQuarrie at their residence, “Antrim Cottage,” Titahi Bay, on .Saturday evening. The floral decorations in the supper-room, dance-room and lounge were carried out with bowls of early spring bulbs, and the beautiful view of the bay made the surroundings ideal for a very pleasant evening. Mrs. McQuarrie received her guests wearing a smart frock of floral georgette. Dancing was a feature of the evening, during which some amusing competitions were greatly enjoyed by all present. A dainty supper was served. Among the guests were: Misses J. Sutherland, M. Mac Kay, N. Zemba, B. Syme, G. Jones, R. Burge, M. White, A. Rees-Jones, E. Bacon, M. Turner. J. Brice. N. Arlow, Messrs.
