VARSITY’S BIG SCORE

Melrose-Selwyn Defeated University set the pace early in their game against Melrqse-Selwyn, at Kelburn Park, and completely outclassed the opposition to win by 29 points to 5, In the firs’ spell there was not a great deal of difference between the teams, but after the interval University asserted their superiority, and were definitely on top. With the students dominating the scrums for the greater part, Melrose-Selwyn fought gamely in the face of losing odds. Their backs were no match for Varsity’s. The most outstanding features of the match were the displays given by two University players, McElwain and Tricklebank. McElwain as a winger played a brilliant game, and was in the picture most of the time. He demonstrated a great burst of speed when, fielding a high kick in his own twenty-five, he clapped on the pace over the whole length of the field to score a spectacular try. University owed much of their success to Trioklebank. who time and again found the line with well-placed . kicks. His tackling was sure and his judgment perfect. Male played a sound defensive game for Melrose-'Selwyn, and was also prominent in attack. He earned applause from the spectators when, from a scrum near the University line, ho ran round the blind and used the dummy to score a well-deserved try, which ho converted. Toward the end of the game, when play was rather willing, Hale became involved in an incident which resulted in his being ordered off. An exceptionally bright piece of play took place just before the end of the first spell, when Rae got the ball away smartly for the whole of the back line to handla. Tricklebank coming up ns extra man and finishing off the movement. For University tries wore scored by Wilson, Wild, Trioklcbank, Rac, Mc-

Elwain (2) and Russell. Rao converted three and Tricklebank one. Mr. T. Cole was referee.
