G. Staveley Wins First Professional Event CASH CLUB’S OPENING RACE Six riders started in the first event organised by the Wellington Cash Athletic Cycling Club, a 20-mile road cycle ride from the Wellington central fire station to the V.1.C., Lower Hutt, and back. G. Staveley (2jmin.) was the winner, his time being an hour dead, with Wright (3lmin.) second, close behind him. Fastest time went t_o L. G. Lukey, one second ahead of Staveley, with 1.j.29. The limit man, J. Corryorini (6min.) led all the way, and had increased his lead over the other competitors, and was on his way home when he developed cramp and had to withdraw. Staveley caught Wright, who had had a minute s start on him, at King’s Road, Lower Hutt, and from then on. to the turning point, and throughout the entire homeward trip, the two riders clung together. Along the long Jervois Quay straight they battled, Staveley gaining the victory by about two lengths. Lukey came in third, having been without a companion at any stage of the journey. Wyeth’s handle-bars came off at Petone ramp, and he crashed through the fence, injuring his knees, but he repaired the cycle and remounted. Seiling also rode well on the outward, journev, and was in a good position at the turn, but J. Corryorini (6min.) led all the way out, increasing his lead over the other competitors, and was on his way home, still well in front,_ when he developed cramp and had to withdraw. Details are: —Barker (Poneke), omiu. 1: Robson (Poneke), 3mm., 2; Sinclair (Port Nicholson), 3min.. 3. Fastest time: T. Roe (Petone), 1: K. Wilson (Port Nicholson). 2; O. Disley (Port Nicholson). 3. Time, 77.52 1-5. A junior race over I<> miles resulted.:— Bold (6niin.). 1; Kay ; Smithers (2min.), 3. Time. 44.40 2-o. Fastest time: Stevens, 1; Smithers. 2; Biggs, 3. Time. 40.41.
