DR. G. CRAIG RETIRES

Comptroller of Customs DISTINGUISHED RECORD The pending retirement from the Government service of Dr. George Craig, C.M.G., LL.D., Comptroller of Customs, and a civil servant of outstanding ability, was announced yesterday. It is anticipated that he will be succeeded by Mr.. E. D. Good, the assistant Comptroller. Dr. Craig, who was born in Dunedin in 1873, is a son of Mr. James Craig, a Southland farmer. The land, as an occupation, held no charms for the studious lad, who, after being educated at the Otago Boys’ High School at Dunedin, became a cadet in the Customs Department at Timaru in 1891. Two years later, he passed the senior Civil Service examination with distinction, the only one to do so that year. This brought the young man under notice, so that the next year saw him transferred to head office, Wellington, as statistical clerk, where he was able to continue his studies in the law at Victoria College. Dr. Craig became an examining officer in 1897, at first at Dunedin and afterward at Wellington. He added to his attainments in 1903 by qualifying as a solicitor.

Four years later lie was appointed officer in charge of the Customs Audit, a very responsible position in view of the large sums of money received daily by Customs offices throughout New Zealand. Then in 1908 he gained his LL.B, degree. Dr. Craig became chief clerk to the department in 1910, assist-ant-comptroller in 1913. aud comptroller in 1925. In recognition of his educational attainments aud his distinction as a civil servant, Dr. Craig was created C.M.G. iu 1928. In recent years Dr. Craig has been associated with several important missions abroad. He accompanied the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates to the Ottawa Conference in 1933. and has since been to Australia in connection with tariff negotiations between the two countries. He accompanied the I’rime Minister to tlie Imperial Conference in Loudon in 1930. and was a member of the Tariff Commissions of 1927 and 1933.

Dr. Craig is to relinquish his official duties as Comptroller of Customs at the end of tlie month.
