MAYOR’S RETIREMENT

Regret of Present Council WANGANUI GATHERING Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, April 10. That the retirement of Mr. N. G, Armstrong as Mayor of Wanganui is a matter of great iegret among the members of the present council, was shown at a supper gathering, when tributes were paid to his fair rulings and strong leadership throughout a difficult period. ■ The deputy-mayor, Mr. J. Siddells, in proposing the mayor’s health; referred to the fact that he had shown no favouritism. Mr. Siddells also spoke highly of the work of the mayoress. During the evening toasts were honoured in tribute to the work of the deputymayor, the chairmen of committees, ill the councillors and the staff. The mayor spoke of the co-operation he. had had from the public and social bodies, and of the responsibility of citizens in matters pertaining to the welfare of the city. He said that it was the duty of the mayor tc cake s big par t in matters of a public nature which were outside the immediate orbit of the council. such as coping with distress among the unemployed. In this work he had had wonderful help from all quarters. He specially mentioned Miss Dexter whose unselfish energy ar. behalf of others was a wonderful thing, he <aid Mr David McFarlane’s work m placing over 200 boys on farms was another matter his Worship praised, and ilso that of Mrs. Wickham, of the women’s division, .in placing girls in employment in the country.
