MANY GORSE FIRES

Spectacular Blaze at Hataitai NO DAMAGE TO HOUSES Dense volumes -of smoke that blanketed the hgrbour poured from a gorse fire which broke out near the Patent Slip late yesterday afternoon, and kept the City brigade occupied for three hours. The fire covered the hillside from the patent slip building right up to Kainui Road, above, and extended the whole length of that street, burning the gorse over an area estimated to be four or five acres.' Houses were endangered at various times, but the work of the firemen prevented any damage to property. The brigade had an exceptionally busy day, ami attended 13 calls, nearly all of which were to gorse or grass. At about 11 a.m. the brigade was called to 36 Athens Street, Miramar, a five-roomed house owned by Mr. Leo Albert, and occupied by Mr. Roy Williams, where the washhouse at the rear of the house was alight. The outbreak was confined to the place of origin. At 4.15 a.m. a call was received from 7 Hall Street, a tive-roomed house occupied by Mr. Max Rozental, where minor damage had been done, owing to an electric iron having been left switched on. Other calls to gorse and grass fires were:—Khandallah 2; Mount Street 2; Ngaio, Ngahauranga, Patent Slip,Wadestown. Kilbirnie and Kelburn. Gorse and grass tires at 'Wadestown, Lyall Bay and Northland were also attended on Saturday.
