WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Branch Formed at Mauriceville MONTH’S ACTIVITIES Nowhere has the growth of Women’s Institutes been more noticeable than in the Wairarapa district, which originally comprised the old Wellington Provincial Federation. This has been divided into four parts during the past two years, a step whirfi has been more than justified by the results. New Institutes have come into existence with astonishing rapidity, especially in the Bush-Wairarapa district. The latest newcomer is Mauriceville, where a meeting was recently held in the Mauriceville East Hall. Mrs. I. D. Cameron presided over a gathering of keenly interested women who followed closely the description given by Mr. Percy Welch, voluntaryorganiser, of the aims, ideals, and methods of work of Women’s Institutes. At the elose of her talk it was unanimously decided to form an institute, and officers were elected. Mrs. Welch also gave a demonstration of the making of" wicker stools and organdie sachets. The secretary of the new institute is Mrs. J. M. McLean. Picnic at Te Whiti. A most enjoyable picnic was held under the auspices of the Gladstone Women’s Institute recently at Te Whiti. The grounds kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. Cotter were ideal, and the trees on the river bank provided shade for everyone. During the day running events were held and prizes distributed. The success of the picnic was largely due to the untiring energy of the members of the committee. Enjoyable Garden Party.
