Preparing For Saturday GOING ON PLOUGH Nothing Outstanding Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, February 5. The outside of the course proper at Riccarton to-day was thrown open for fast work, but, owing to its hard state, most of the trainers preferred the plough, whic’h has been of great service during the long spell of dry weather. There was a good amount of galloping by horses to race at Riccarton on Saturday and at Dunedin next week, but there was nothing outstanding. Variant and Hostis, who were galloped on Monday, were restricted to easy work. The latter has again developed the wayward habits in going on to the track he showed earlier in his preparation. Chidden, picked up by Sovereign Lady, ran five furlongs in 1.5. Chokeboi’® Candidates. Fracas covered six furlongs in 1.18, taking 39 for each half. She is to contest the Midsummer Handicap on Saturday in preference to the Craven Plate, and will be ridden by L. J. Ellis. Bun Fight reeled off half a mile in 50 2-5, the last three furlongs in 37 4-5, and Knock Out finished better than Silly Owl at the end of six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, the last three in 40. Astaraea sprinted three furlongs, and Back Thrust and Owlsgleam followed in 38. Penelope ran five furlongs in 1.4 4-5, and Patrole beat Knowledge over the same ground in 1.4 3-5. Desirable covered six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, and her stable-mate, Minerval, after a circuit at a strong pace, ran a mile in 1.44 2-5, the lash half in 53 2-5. Bella Rosa strode over six furlongs in 1.17, and’ Nightly, assisted by Safety Zone from the top of the straight, ran five furlongs in 1.3, the last half-mile in 49 3-5. A Strong Pair. Polydora and Scratchmere Scar pleased in a seven-furlong task executed in 1.29 2-5, the last three in 39 2-5. The latter was in front most of the way, but the pair finished together. Polydora has improved with every gallop of late, and is undoubtedly back to her old form. She will be ridden by M. Kirwan on Saturday. Jerry Boy strode over seven furlongs in 1.34. ‘He will have to be'regarded on Saturday. Abdication broke away in front of Greek Shepherd commencing a half-mile sprint in 50, but there was not much between them at the post. On the Course Proper. Tout le Monde beat Cleaner by two lengths at the conclusion of. seven furlongs in 1.29 4-5, the last half in 51. Malvasia finished in front of Nardoo and Olive Smith after taking 1.6 for the five furlongs. Invoice sprinted three furlongs well in 381-5, and Silver Ring executed a like task along the back in 37 3-5. Riptide and Maroha were abreast at the end of six furlongs run in 1.18 1-5. the last three in 40. Grand Review and Sky Rover took 1.46 4-5 for a mile, and Manetho followed in 1.47 2-5. Gas Mask easily beat Lucetta over five furlongs in 1.6 3-5. Emissary and Moonbeam recorded 1.4 for a like journey, taking 381 for the last three. Southdown, assisted by Hostile, registered similar time over five furlongs, while .Madam Pompadour, carrying a good weight, also recorded 1.4. Top Rank and Importance, joined by Tuirau for the last three, ran six furlongs in 1.18, the first-named finishing in front. Grecian Prince, looking very bright, was allotted easy work. At the Right End. Some Shamble and Colossinn ran away from Silver Sight, starting off on a sixfurlong journey, and were well clear of him entering the straight, but Silver Sight beat Colossian at the end with Some Shamble beaten off. The distance occupied 1.16 3-5, the last three in 39. Golden Dart, with a light weight, covered seven furlongs in 1.29 4 J 5. Ranelash cleared out from Final Shot over the’final stages of a seven-furlong gallop in 1.30, the last three in 39. Vintage strode over seven furlongs in 1.31 at an even pace. Imperial Spear beat Doiran by several lengths at the end of seven furlongs iu 1.29 4-5, finishing on strongly. Gaysome reeled off six furlongs in 1.14 4-5, the last three in 38 2-5. This filly has undoubted ability, but unfortunately does not get the same moving in starts in her races as in her track essays, Quebec ran six furlongs in 1.19, and Jolly Beggar and Fair Weather covered the same ground in 1.18 2-5. Lowater ran seven furlongs in 1.34, and Courtyard and Rose of Tralee recorded 1.17 2-5 for six furlongs. Colombo bent Lord Masham over five furlongs in 1.5, Goldstead accompanying them. Gone Off. Sam Smith has not done well since the Wellington meeting, and will not be racing at Riccarton on Saturday. D. Arnott, who was some time back attached to the Chokebore stable, but has been absent in the Auckland district for a good while, has been appointed head man for the stable, a position recently vacated by D. Marks, who is proceeding to’ Fordell to act as private trainer for Mr. W. McA. Dunean. From Hastings. Cuddle is expected to be railed from Hastings in charge of her owner-trainer, C. J. Stowe. She is to race at Riccarton on Saturday, and will go on to Wingatui for the Dunedin Cup. Her usual pilot, R. J. Flower, will ride her on the trip. Riding on Saturday.
