TARANAKI FIELDS

Prospects For To-day CUP AND FLYING

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Good fields, with one or two horses of quality, are carded for the opening day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting at New Plymouth to-day. Interest will be added to the racing by the presence of a couple of visitors from Riccarton, whiio Auckland, Manawatu, Uangitikei and Trantham are also represented. Betting will be on the win and place system, the public being assisted by the use of manual dividend barometers. The track conditions will be firm and fast. Illuminate and Sandy Dix appear the most likely form horses in the Waitava Hurdles. Ythan will have to improve upon his Wanganui showings, though it is possible he may run better on his home track. The favourites are likely to bo Illuminate and Sandy Dix. Wotan will be missing from, the Juvenile event, in which barrier positions may play an important part. Collodion, Hororata, Note Issue, Fast Acre and Link Divine will all be fancied. Most money may come for Fast Acre, Collodion and Link Divine. Diatomous will have to improve upon his Wellington form to win the Flying Handicap, but he may have freshened up, and he cannot be discarded. Red Manfred is also in the Taranaki Cup. He has not run over a sprint distance for some time, but there is no reason why he should not make a prominent showing if started here. He is a quick beginner, and has ■plenty of pace. Mother Superior ran badly at Wanganui, but she is always liable to show her best in a race. Copyist, Lady Kyra, Limulus and Burnish should be the best lightweights. The race may be a tricky one, but good showings should come from Limulus, Mother Superior and Burnish.

The set-weight race presents a real difficulty, as there is not much form among the whole field. The best backed may be Inveresk, Ringside, and Vinco. A very' evenly balanced field will contest the Taranaki Cup. Red Manfred, Aga Khan, Cherry King, Lalla Quex, and Fersen will all b? backed on recent form, while Tlnzoor has had time to get into something like his best form again. Favourites may be Hazoor, Cherry King, and Fersen.

Holiday form gives Tahurangi a good prospect in the distance hack, and more recently there are the showings of St. Clara, and Silk Sox. while Red Rufus, Taitorn and Dorado should be possibilities. Boudoir may be an upsetting factor. She ran a promising race on Saturday at Wanganui. The best backed may be Silk Sox, St. Qlara, and Boudoir. Form horses in the Mimi Highweight are Chief Marionette, Full Throttle, Colenso, and Flamingo, while the best form of Rnri and Rust would see them prominent. Money may come for Chief Marionette, Full Throttle, and Flamingo. A good field of hacks will parade in the concluding event, and it looks to be the hardest race of the day. Very few can be ruled out, and a good rider and favourable post position should influence the result. Favourites may be Onewhctu, Brown Betty, and Pladie The card is as follows: —
