TOM BROWN PICNIC

Happy Day at Day’s Bay PARADE OF OVER 1000 Saturday was a glorious day for the Tom Brown League’s picnic, which is organised every year by James Smith Ltd. Shortly after 8 o’clock the boys began to assemble in Pringle Avenue at the rear of James Smith’s, and at 9 o’clock a procession of over 1000 Tom Brown League boys, with banners flying and led by the Regimental Band, marched through the city by way of Willis Street and Lambton Quay to the Eastbourne Ferry Wharf. The s.e. Muritai, chartered by James Smith’s for the occasion, was soon loaded to its capacity with a merry crowd of boys, as well as parents and friends who had been waiting the boys on the Ferry Wharf. The Muritai, with flags flying and the band playing, drew away from the wharf and headed for Bay’s Bay, where the picnic was held. By courtesy of the captain of the Muritai, the trip across the harbour included ah enjoyable excursion sound Somes Island. The arrival at Day’s'Bay was timed to give the boys an opportunity for a swim before lunch.

At 1.30 p.m. the sports meeting commenced, and went without a hitch. All the events were keenly contested, and there were some exciting finishes. In the absence of the managing director, Mr. A. p. Smith, the prizes, donated by the firm, were presented by Mr. J. G. Smith, director. No effort was spared to make the outing a success. Ample supplies of free ice-cream, sweets and soft drinks were available. In case of accidents the firm had arranged for the attendance of two nurses from the Red Cross Society, and two members of the Eastbourne Surf Club, but happily their services were not required. At 4 o’clock the Muritai, with her decks crowded with tired but happy Tom Brown League boys, sailed for home.
