ABNORMAL RAINFALL AT SAMOA
Twenty Inches in 24 Hours BANANA CONSIGNMENT MAY BE TOTAL LOSS By Telegraph.—Press Assn. — Copyright. (Received January 20, 6.30 p.m.) Apia, January 18. Abnormal rainfall has fallen during the last two days.- Approximately 20 inches fell in 24 hours, accompanied by hurricane squalls, and caused considerable damage to roads and bridges between Apia and Tale'fa. The steamer Waikawa arrived on January 16 to load 4000 cases of bananas for Auckland, bur owing to the rain and a heavy sea running in the harbour, the steamer was unable to load. The Waikawa went- outside on Thursday morning and returned to port on Friday evening when the weather moderated. The ban-mas were packed ready for shipment on Tuesday, and it is thought that the consignment will be a total loss, owing to rhe i'ruir ripening and becoming unfit to ship. However, 3930 cases of bananas were loaded, and the vessel sailed on Saturday morning. The weather is now normal.
