ART PRIZE WINNER
Relief Worker’s Success HOME-MADE PIGMENTS Sydney, January 20. Henry Hanke, who was awarded the Archibald Prize for portrait painting, of £390, also collected yesterday £2/9/10, being his fortnight’s wages as a relief worker. His picture, the selection of which has caused a sensation in the art world, was painted with home-made pigments on a home-prepared canvas. Hr. Hanke painted his reflection in a mirror. Two years ago, finding there was no sale for the works of an “unknown” artist, Mr. Hanke was forced to accept re'ief work. He won the Archibald Prize this year from a record entry of 92, including many of Australia’s recognised portrait painters.
