PLUNGE INTO SWAMP
Elderly Motorists’ Lucky Escape SKID AND SOMERSAULT Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 2S. Two occupants of a four-seater sedan motor-car escaped serious injury when the vehicle plunged into a mangrove swamp by Lake Road, Northcote. Mr. E. Jordan, aged 79, of 42 Queen Street, Northcote, who had as passenger Mr. W. 11. Gee, aged 56, of Lake Road, Northcote, was driving the ear, and was about to cross the bridge spanning the Kauri Gully Stream when the car skidded and somersaulted three times. It landed on its wheels in the mangrove swamp 10ft. below the road. The occupants received cuts, and were attended by Dr. K. H. Holdgate, •» Birkenhead, before proceeding to their homes.
The car was not extensively damaged, and was towed to Northcote. The locality has been the scene of similar accidents, and excavations of the bank have been made to provide better visibility at the bends. Some years ago the Main Highways Board approved a subsidy for straightening the road by erecting a higher culvert more to the westward, in alignment with the road from the Northcote primary school, eliminating the dangerous bend.
