DEATH AT 101 YEARS

The death of probably the last of the old fighting women of the Waikato, Martana Horomona Hetaraka Tioriori, occurred at Kohekohe, near Waiuku, last week at the age of 101 years. Deceased was known as Pareaututu, and was born in 1832 at near Cambridge. During the fighting ’in the Waikato in 1864 she was one of the women who remained by their chief, Rewi Maniapoto, in his stand against the pakeha. Pareaututu saw the fighting at Orakau and Rangiawhia, near Te Awamutu. At this time her husband took their eldest child to hide him in the bush. Thinking him killed, she stood by her chief with other women of the tribe. It was three months before she was reunited with her husband and child.
At the time of her death. Pareaututu was a great-great-grandmother, having a large number of descendants, including a son and two daughters, residing in various parts of the Auckland province. She had never suffered a day’s illness. The funeral took place at Taupiri on Friday.
