Commemorative Plate For Liner Waiwera
THE FIRST CONTINGENT
To commemorate their association with the original ship Waiwera, which took the first two New Zealand contingents to the Boer War, the South African War Veterans’ Association have made arrangements to present a suitably-inscribed brass plate to the second vessel of that name which is at present in New Zealand waters. In making known this decision of tlie association’s Dominion executive, at the reunion on Saturday evening, Captain J. J. Clark recalled that the original Waiwera had left New Zealand with the first contingent on October 21, 1899, and on her return to New Zealand took the second contingent to South Africa on January 20, 1900. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, the owners of the present vessel, had expressed their willingness to accede to the association’s wishes, and the presentation would be made when the ship was in Wellington between November 17 and 20.
it is hoped that Major-General Sir Alfred Robin would be able to unveil the plate, which will be dedicated by the Rev. Canon Percival James, and the presentation is to be made the occasion for a gathering of veterans.
