OBITUARY

Mr. Ralph Nettleton The death has occurred of Mr. Ralph Nettleton, aged 76, New Zealand representative of Laycock and Company, Bradford, for 21 years, states a Press Association message from Christchurch. He was well known to wool brokers, buyers, and shipping firms in the Do minion and retired in 1924. He was prominently connected with th® Baptist Church as a deacon. Mr. W. R. Archibald A very wide circle Of friends and admirers will learn with regret of the death of Mr. W. R. (“Charlie”) Archibald. which occurred on Thursday. Mr. Archibald was the younger son of the late Mr. Robert Archibald, a prominent building contractor, of Wellington, and a brother of the late Mr. T. Archibald, of the firm of Messrs. McLean and Archibald. Formerly a jeweller, he was able to retire fairly early in life, and devote himself to his favourite hobby, horticulture. His beautiful gardens at Day’s Bay. which had more than a provincial reputation, were created from a wilderness of birch-clad hillside, and included countless varieties of plants. He was a particularly successful grower of roses and hydrangeas, in the cultivation of which he expended great labour and expense in research, and was always ready to allow people interested to wander at will among the plots. Mr. Archibald, who was unmarried, had a genial and generous personality, which won for him a host of friends, and was a highly popular member of the Wellington Federal Club. His health latterly had been a cause of some anxiety. He appeared to have been overtaken by a sudden seizure while driving round the Day’s Bay Road on Thursday evening, but before collapsing had drawn over to the side and stopped the car at Point Howard. Mr. A. W. Mills The death of Mr. A. W, Mills, formerly a well-known West Coast accountant and sportsman, occurred at Otaki yesterday. Mr. Mills, who was born in London, came to New Zealand as a young man. For a number of years he was in business at Westport as a public accountant, and a few years ago resided in Christchurch He was well known on the West Coast and in the Manawatu as an enthusiastic sportsman. He is -survived bv his widow and five childpen—Mrs. A. W. Gyles (Wellington), Mrs. P. T. Brown (Eden, New South Wales). Miss R. Mills (Otaki), Mr. R. Mills (Hamilton), and Mr. L. Milla . (Otaki).
