GRADING OF SCHOOLS
Adverse Amendment Lost An amendment to reduce by £1 th© education vote in the Supplementary Estimates was moved by Mr. H. Atmore (Ind., Nelson) in the House of Representatives yesterday. He did this as an indication that the Minister of Education should reduce by 10 per cent, as requested'by the New Zealand Educational Institute, the numbers determining the grades and sub-grades of public primary schools in order to obviate the down grading of schools and which necessitated transfers, dismissals and changes of teachers. The amendment was lost by 34 votes to 21. Mr. R. A. Wright (Ind., Wellington Suburbs) said that the attendance at school had been greatly diminished, as a result of various causes. .Schools had consequently been down-graded. Every time that was done teachers were dismissed, or transferred to other positions. The Minister of Education had stated that when. schools were down-graded teachers would be transferred, but the positions were not available. . The Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. J. A. Young, said the position was receiving the earnest consideration o" the Minister of Education. -
