SLUM AREAS
None Existing in Auckland
TOWN-PLANNING REPORT
Dominion Special Service. Auckland, August 27.
Nothing which could strictly be, called a slum area has been found in Auckland 'by the technical group of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Town-planning Institute. Recently the institute has been interesting itself in the question of slum clearance, and its technical group was appointed to Inquire into the position. That inquiry has now been completed.
The chairman of the branch, Mr.' R. A. Lippincott, stated that as a result of their Investigations they found a number of houses, that, should be demolished or renovated' and others which demanded attention because the ordinary amenities of life were lacking. Nevertheless as far as any slum area was concerned which would justify wholesale demolition and replanning jt was found that such an area did not exist in Auckland. , During recent years about 2000 houses have been demolished in Auckland, but members of the group are of opinion that there remain many yet that might well be added to the list for destruction. That refers, however, to individual houses and not to any .definite area. In the circumstances the branch does not propose to go any further with the matter at present.
