HOAXED BY A BOTTLE
Energetic Relief Workers
SEARCH FOR “TREASURE”
Dominion Special Service.
Wangcuini, July 27. Relief workers engaged on excavating a portion of Queen’s Park came upon a bottle containing a piece of white paper, on which was written in pencil: “August 10, 1868. 150 sovereigns in a bottle 9 feet from this bottle. (Signed) Private-Carey, N.Z. Regiment." Immediate'y the discovery was made ii furious digging campaign started, wonderful energy being shown by the workers in an endeavour to discover the “hidden treasure.’’ The activity wilted sadly, however, when a wise member of the gang pointed out that screw-topped bottles were not in use in 1868. Some of the gang were not altogether satisfied, and made a thorough search. They knew that a Private Carey belonged to the 65th Regiment in the very early days. The fact that the writing on the paper looked to be of more or less recent origin did not hinder a very close search being completed. No sovereigns have yet been discovered.
