TOWN BEAUTIFICATION

Masterton Society’s Work

Activities of the Masterton Beautifying Society during the past year, and proposals for future town improvements were discussed at the annual meeting of the society this week. It was stated that the society had completed the year in a fairly sound position financially. The president, Dr. Archer Hoskmg. in a ‘review of the past year’s operations, said good use was being made of the land at the rear of the park, the society having planted eucalypts and kowhais there. No doubt its activities could -be extended in that locality. The society had met a disappointment with the proposed weir and lake, but a promise had been given that this would be dealt with as soon as the water above the site was controlled. The rhododendron walk was an asset to the town. Dr. Hosking stated that the Allan memorial walk and bridge was well under way. The foundations of the bridge were in, and the material required was in view. The secretary, Mr. A. W. Reynolds, said that at the end of the year the society held a credit balance of £271, but since then had received a grant of £lOO from the borough council. During the year the society expended £95. A suggestion was made by Mr. Gardner that before next planting season a drive should be organised for 4000 bulbs. He referred to the excellent work being done in the park by the council’s park committee in the establishment of a rhododendron dell aiid in other ways. It was decided to congratulate the park committee on its work. The election of officers resulted as tollows :—President. Dr. Archer Hosking; vice-presidents, Miss F. P. Maunsell, Messrs. E. W. Payton and 11. E. Gardner: committee. Messrs. 1,. Robinson, C. H. Hanley, C. L. Rutty. G. G. Tolhurst, 11. F. Frost, G. R. Croll, A. W. Reynolds, and N.
