TRANSLATION TEST

European Languages An interesting experiment has been conducted in Paris by a well-known daily illustrated journal. The object was to prove or disprove the efficiency of Esperanto as an international auxiliary language. M. Hermant, a prominent man of letters, furnished a text in the French language, which had to be translated by experts into English, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Esperanto. After this first set of experts had translated the original into their respective tongues, another set of experts had to put the translation back . into the original. These were ‘hen compared with the French text. The very surprising result was that the Italian and Esperanto reproductions were so closely alike to the original that it was difficult to assert which was really the better of the two. An eminent playwright, one of the jury, reported that the test showed some astounding tilings—for instance, that the Italian and Esperanto texts reproduced the French text almost exactly. The German and Russian did not give very good results. The English was better, the Spanish, save for a few serious mistakes, gave satisfaction to the jury. The Italian , was admirable. '
