BOLTING HORSES
Inspector’s Prompt Action
A very spirited and brave act was witnessed in Wakefield Street at about 5 o’clock on Tuesday evening. ' When a horse-drawn lorry was passing along Jervois Quay, near Taranaki Street, a sudden fierce gust of wind jerked' a tarpaulin off. The driver pulled up to recover the tarpaulin, and the sportive gale must have given it a flick, for it so alarmed the horses that they bolted. They dashed for Wakefield Street, as shouts of warning were heard on all sides. No one moved to stop the bolting team until they passed the junction of the three streets, when Inspector W. McKeen, who was on point duty, realising the danger of jllowing two crazed draught horses to take charge of'the street, ran after them. Making a great effort, he caught up the dragging reins when opposite the Leyland warehouse, and succeeded in pulling the horses up before they reached the intersection of Tory Street.
