Mixed doubles, first round: Stedman and Miss McAlpine defeated Billington and Miss Hobson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3; Malfroy and Miss Stammers defeated Lysnght aud Miss Yorke, 10-8, 8-6; Hare and Miss Hardwick defeated Turnbull and Miss Hartigan, 6-0, 4-6, 10-S. ,- In defeating the much-improved Stedman, Crawford at first had a run of double faults. He then found admirable form, especially with the backhand. Stedman was leading 5-2 in the third set, after which the imperturbable Crawford steadied himself and outplayed the New Zealander at every phase. The other members of the Australian Davis Cup team had easy victories. Avory. with a mixed game of di opshots and lobs, gave Lee no chance to use his famous forehand. Hare, the English hope, masterfully defeated the French hope, Merlin. The “News-Chronicle” acclaims Hare as a great player who is undoubtedly a world-beater in the making.
