FREE KINDERGARTEN

At a meeting of the Wellington Free Kindergarten Council, remits were considered for the forthcoming conference of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union, which will be held in Wellington during next term. The reports from the locahcommittees showed great activity during the month. Ngaio had held a most successful dance which had realised over £lB, while Wellington Soutli had realised a similar amount from a jumble sale. Brooklyn and Berhampore report steady and consistent efforts, and Petone a successful card party and jumble sale. Appreciative mention was made of the kind offer of Mrs. Hope Gibbons, to lend her beautiful home for a dance in aid of funds for the Newtown Free Kindergarten.’ ' Miss. England gave a report of the recent conference of the National Council of Women, and of the interesting discussions on the various remits which had come forward for consideration. Members of the Kindergarten Council were gratified that points of such vital importance to women and children were receiving such careful thought - The principal, Miss Wilson, reported that during the month the staff had invited the students to an evening, when they h;id dramatised “An Oldtime Kindergarten,” with a view to giving the students an idea of the progress that has been made in our attitude toward child life. Miss Wilson’s report went on to state that the difference is one of procedure, and that we have come to realise more acutely that we do not make a truly polite child by making him conscious of social forms, like shaking hands, etc.: rather does he absorb politeness by being in an atmosphere of consideration—just as we do not make a religious child by teaching him religious forms, but rather by those, adults in his world living a life that is tru’y religious. This attitude has to be real-

Ised toy the teacher before she can hope to create an atmosphere worthy of the young children In her care. The kindergartens will close on Friday next for two weeks’ holiday.
