Dinner Party. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Griffin entertained a number of friends last evening at a dinner party at the Midland Hotel prior to the debut, of their elder daughter, Aroha, at the Marsden School dance. The guests were received in the drawing-room, and the U-sliaped dining table was beautifully decorated with flowers in pink and blue shades. Those present were Misses Aroha and Tira Griffin, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Professor and Mrs. Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Menzies. Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Kirkcaldie, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Anderson, Mrs. Hott, Mr. and Mrs. Dailey, Misses Jocelyn Keeling, M. Fanning, M. A Coming of Age.
A delightful party was given recently in the Tiraumea Hall by Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Harman, of Haunui, on the occasion of . the coming-of-age of their daughter Grace. There were over 200 guests, who had come from all parts of the district. Duririg the evening Miss Harman was presented with the proverbial latch-key, and a lovely bouquet made by Miss Beresford. A dainty supper was handed round, and the birthday cake cut. Miss Harman wore a white organdie frock over white satin, with sea-green bandeau shoes, necklace and earrings to match. Lyceum Club. ,
Last evening at the Lyceum Club a delightful programme of scenes and songs from Shakespeare was presented by members of the Drama and Reading Circles, under the direction of Miss Hardiiige-Maltby. There was a splendid attendance, find the comfort of the club rooms added considerably to the evening’s enjoyment.
The programme was as follows:— Piano solo, Mrs. Wilson; “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Act 3, scene in a wood near Athens; Helena, Miss Frances Sunley; Hermia, Mrs. L. Watson; Demetrius, Mrs. G. Lyon; Lysander, Miss Gwen Harrison. Song, Mr. Erie Rishworth. Scene from Act 2, “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Miss Catherine Keddeil. Scenes from first, second and third acts, played by Mr. E. North, Miss M. E. P. Ahern. Miss Burity Tingey, Mr. David Herbert, Mrs. J, Thompson, Miss Jose Doyle,', and Miss Fagan. Songs by Mr. B. R. O’Brien and Miss Marjorie Bennie. Scene on a country road from Act 4 of “The Winter’s Tale”; Autolycus., Miss O’Donoghue; a young shepherd, Mrs. E. Sample. Accompaniments by Mrs, Wilson and Miss Kay. An excellent supper was accompanied by the hearty congratulations of the audience to the players.
Valedictory. of the Women’s Committee of the Masterton Harrier Club gathered at the home of Mrs. George Shaw, Te Ore Ore, on a recent afternoon, to farewell Mrs. E. W, de Lisle, one of their most enthusiastic members, who has left for her new home in Christchurch. During the afternoon Mrs. J. Shaw, president, on behalf of the women’s committee presented the guest with a suede travelling cushion. Mrs. Shaw referred to the line services of Mrs. de Lisle so willingly given at all times. Miss Bessie Shaw, who acted as hostess, presented Mrs. de Lisle and her daughter, Miss Joy de Lisle, with bouquets. Mrs. Orebaugh Entertains. , Lovely gladioli and giant antirrhinum in a riot of mixed colouring decorated the rooms in Mrs. Orebaugh’s house in Bolton Street yesterday afternoon, when she entertained a number of friends at afternoon tea. There was delightful music: songs by Miss Marjorie Bennie and Miss Christina Ormlston, for whicji Madame Evelyn de Mauny played the accompaniments, and pianoforte solos by Madame de Maiiny. Afternoon tea was served in the dining-roOm. where a big bowl of roses stood in the centre of the table. Mrs. Orebaugh’s dress of black silk crepe had a square neck which, with the edge of the sleeves, was embroidered in a rose design with finely sewn white and pink beads. The guests were Mrs. F. A large party-of friends and relatives gathered on board the Akaroa on Tuesday evening to bid farewell to Miss Hilda Chudley, the popular young Wellington singer, who is going to London. Her cabin was a bower of autumn flowers, and parcels of every size promised delightful occupation at sea. Among those who wished her bon voyage during the evening were Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Carey, Mr. Ernest Dawson. Mr. and Mrs. Davies, Madame Kendall. Mr.. Mrs. and Miss Prouse, Miss Nora Gray. Dr. and Mrs. Gordon Kemp. Mrs. Saunders. On Tuesday evening an enjoyable supper was given at Waddingtons, Petone, by the old students of the Petone Memorial Technical College in bono-< of Mrs. Leary, who is leaving her position as commercial instructress *o take up n similar oi’i* in Auckland During supper Mr. Stan Barrett made an impressive farewell speech, to which Mrs. Leary made, a suitable reply M’ss G'wcn Boyes then presented Mrs. Leary with a beautiful bouquet. The supper closed with (lie singing of “For Six’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” followed by three cheers. Among those present at the supper were Mrs. MacFadyen. wife of the principal of the college.
