NEW YORK’S LIBERTY STATUE.
"Several thousands of pounds are to be spent on the preservation of the Statue ■of Liberty at the entrance to New York Harbour. This colossal statue was presented to America by the French nation and was built to the designs of M. Bartholdi. It stands 105 ft. high, the extreme height from the feet to the upper end of the torch being 137 ft. 9in. The statue is on a granite pedestal S3ft. high. A person 6ft. high standing on the lips of the statue can only reach to the eyebrow, and it is possible for ia man to pass through the tip of the (nose, while the eyes measure 6ft. from icorner to corner. The statue is built on ißedloe’s Island in New York Bay, one eind a-quarter miles from the Battery or [mainland of New York City, and the electric torch, held 306 ft. above the water, tis said to lie the highest beacon in the •world.
