ESCAPE FROM LOCK-UP

Palmerston North Prisoner on Remand NOT YET RECAPTURED Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 18. Some time after 6 o’clock on Saturday night, William Wallace Clifford, a labourer, aged 25 years, made his escape from a cell in the lock-up at Palmerston North police station. Despite an intensive search, he had not been recaptured to-night. It is understood that Clifford, who was on remand on charges of stealing jewellery valued at £95 from the residence of Maurice Millar in Amesbury Street, and stealing a purse and £2 3/- in money, was in his cell when bis tea was brought to him, but had disappeared when a constable visited the cell later.

Clifford had escaped from the cell by forcing a grating in the roof.
