THE BRAVE ST. BERNARD
* ♦ * A HERO OF SWISS SNOWS Rupert was a beautiful St. Bernard dog, the idol o£ a little Swiss village. He stood three feet high, had a large head, large legs, and big brown eyes that always seemed to speak friendship. He stood in a shed, having a little barrel of spirits tied to his collar. Experience told him that he was to be sent off to search for some men who had been lost among the snowy mountains. He was led to the path which circled up the mountain, and after a few encouraging pats was let go. With a loud bark he jumped up the boulders, and with long, sweeping strides, be climbed the path, and was soon lost among the ice hummocks.
Rupert ran steadily until he reached the mountain pass, and then he looked about him before ascending the next mountain. He was quite familiar with the country, and knew all the paths and valleys for miles about. It was not snowing, but the air was
