Enthusiasm in Berlin CHANCELLOR’S SPEECH Berlin, January 30. Thousands forming a solid mass all along the route cheered and saluted Herr Hitler as he was proceeding to the Reichstag meeting in the Kroll Opera House to give an account of his year’s stewardship. The deputies, all in either brown shirts or black uniforms. clamorously received the Chancellor, who received from President Hindenburg a handwritten letter of congratulation on bis successful leadership. ' ' Herr Hitler. In a’lengthy speech, declared that the year would be known as the “Year of the Nazi Revolution.” which had changed every sphere of German life and prevented the total collapse which was threatened under the crippling Parliamentary regime. Herr Hitler bitterly attacked the party bickerings following the establishment of the Republic, adding that bourgeois democracy and Marxist internationalism bad produced Cabinets who squandered the nation's economic and political capital. Heroes wore despised. cowards extolled, honest men punishetf. and the lazy rewarded. Herr Hitler-added: “Humanity'has now entered on a timely search for ideas producing a new philosophy of life. The terrors of war with its millions of victims must not recur The Nazi conception does not mean we disrespect others, but we want to keep our own race pure.” Herr Hitler paid a tribute to Italy and Mussolini, and warned M. Stalin that Germany would not tolerate Communism any more than Russia tolerated Nazism, and declared that Germany congratulated Marshal Pilsudski on his broadmindedness. Though Germany had left the League she was willing to help to bring happiness to all peoples. OPINIONS ON SPEECH May Open New Chapter (Received February 1. 12.40 p.m.). London. January 31. Herr Hiller's speech is regarded in some quarters as opening a new clnipter in international politics. The “Daily Telegraph” says that a statesman must be an arch dissimulator indeed if he will speak thus and vet be a Machiavcl at heart.
