VALUABLE DATA GAINED Moscow, January 30. Ascending unannounced at 5.40 am. a Soviet gondola balloon named the Sirius, built at Osoaviakhim, wh* a crew of three, commanded by J!e " deosenko. beat the previous record ot September last, achieving an altitude of 12.8 miles, from which the _ party broadcast messages to M. Stalin and the Communist Congress. t The balloon curried an infra-red ray outfit with which it was hoped to establish records for distant photography. The descent began at 9 in the morning. The balloon expects to land at Koiumna, 70 miles from Moscow. Aeroplanes have taken off to assist In the landing, as visibility is bad. The crew’ state that they obtained valuable data of cosmic rays. The balloon registered an external temperature of 33 degrees below zero.
The altitude which is reported to have been achieved by the Soviet balloonists works out at 67,500 ft., whereas the present official'record, set up in November last by Commander T. G. Settle and Major Fordney (U.S.A.), is 61,237 ft. At the end of September a Russian balloon reached 63,327 ft.. but as Russia does not recognise the International Aeronautical Federation, the controlling body. Russian achievements have no official status with that body,
