Shorter Working Day
Sir, —As a solution of many presentday problems, may I suggest the following scheme: A working day of, say, 12 hours, divided into two shifts of 6 hours each, applicable in the first instance to the rank and file working in shops and offices. The objects of the scheme are:—(l) Distribution of work involving more staff (not necessarily doubling same), thus creating openings for some of the unemployed, adult and minor; (2) spreading of leisure, thus enabling all to have more time to give to personal affairs and development during the daytime; (3) more outdoor life for the indoor worker, bringing about better health, especially for the older worker ; (4) greater companionship in the home, especially for the mother of young children who is unable to afford assistance; (5) more companionable influence of the father with his children; (6) greater general happiness and efficiency.—I am, etc., CITIZEN. Wellington, December 15.
