AUSTRALIAN STORMS
Lightning and Heavy Rain WIDESPREAD DAMAGE Sydney, December 14. During a violent storm which passed over New South Wales a station homestead at Jerilderie, the property, of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, was set on fire by lightning and destroyed, damage amounting to £5OOO. A butter factory and a number of houses were unroofed at Harden. Trees were uprooted, gardens ruined, and poultry killed. Rain fell in torrents.
In other districts the wheat crops were severely damaged. Two valuable .draught mares were killed by lightning at Corowa. A message from Melbourne states that after heavy rain all day a 55-mile-an-hour gale struck Melbourne last night. Houses were unroofed, fences flattened, and trees uprooted. The 47-ton ketch Agnes was driven on the rocks at Williamstown, and is now breaking up in heavy seas. Yachts and other craft in Port Philip Bay were damaged. Country centres report severe crop damage by hailstorms. Real wintry weather is being experienced in both Melbourne and Sydney.
