WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Meetings in the Province ITE HORO GATHERING The December meeting of the Te Hero Women’s Institute took the form of a children’s afternoon. The competition, a Christmas gift, not exceeding one shilling, was won by Mrs-, Jensen. Mrs. ■Walker, was second and Mrs. Empson third. ' ~ . The children spent a happy time playing games and- competitions and. community singing was also indulged in. Afternoon-tea was set on tables for them. Each child was presented with a paperhat, made by the members. Later in the afternoon,, ice-creams'were- served, and then as each child left for' home, was handed a bag of sweets. The afternoon was indeed a success, and members, as well as the children, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Reikorangi-Waikanae. The monthly meeting of the ReikorangiWaikanae Women’s Institute was held at ■Waikanae. Miss L. Mowbray presided Councillor G. A. Monk spoke on the work of local bodies. A special vote vf thanks was accorded Mrs. Deakin for her efforts in selling Blind Institute wares. A vote of thanks was also passed to Henly in Arden (England) Womens Institute for books and kind wishes. The competition for Christmas present, costing no' more than 1/-, resulted: Mrs. Wilson, 1; Miss Buchanan, 2; Miss Campion, 8. A pair of slippers was won by Miss J. Udy and a peg-bag by Mrs. Priddey. It was decided not to hold a meeting next month. The hostesses were Mesdames Kemsley and Udy and Miss Udy. Paraparaumu. The Deceinber.meeting bf the Paraparaumu Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs. Brown. After the usual business and pleasant discussions with Miss Maddever, Mrs.' Brown introduced Mr. Matheson, who gave an interesting lecture on “Bridges I have seen.” . •The hostesses were .Mesdames Reeve, ' Sherring, Hawke, Fyfe, Mills, and Cromb. There were many entries for the competition, “Christmas gift, costing 'not more than one shilling.” The winners were Mrs. M. Maclean, with a waste-paper basket and Miss Caterer with a crocheted , shopping bag.;. Visitors were welcomed from Tawa’ Flat. Porirna/and Plimmerton. Mrs. Whetstone demonstrated the making of suede moccasins. Mrs. McEwan sang two delightful songs. The competition for. best home-made sweets was won bv Mrs. Reher, with Miss Olive Bryant second. Final arrangement's were made for the children’s Christmas narty., The hostesses for ■ the ■ afternoon were Mesdames Nossiter, Rahdell, Reher and L. C. Bryant. <•< Upper Hutt i The December meeting of the Upper Hutt Women’s Institute' took the form of a Christmas party. The room was beautifully - decorated. Many visitors from other institutes were welcomed.- They included Miss Kane and. Mrs. Kelso, both of whom spoke briefly on subjects of interes’. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. Rogers (president), Mrs. Frier (vice-president), Mrs. Marryatt * (secretary)’, and Mrs. Ching (treasurer),. Bouquets were also presented to Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Tomlin, Mrs. Marryatt and Mrs. Ching, wno are the leaders of the four different circles. The opportunity was also taken to present Mrs. ’ McCurdy (Mayoress) and Mrs, Rogers (president of the institute) • with bouquets. z The - singing circle’'and' the ' dramatic circle contributed several items. Miss Prouee and Mrs. Herschhorn sang solos, and community singing, competitions and dancing, were enjoyed. A very fine display of work done during the year by the arts and crafts circle was on view. AH the arrangements for the afternoon were excellently carried out by Mrs Woods, assisted by - Mesdames Cook, Driscoll, Herschhorn, John, Williams, Hislop, Sawtell, White, Morley, Smith, Judge, Browne, and Miss Cowie. Woodville. The Woodville Women’s Institute had a very bright meeting, Mrs. W. H. Nixon presiding over the usual large gathering. Christmas carrolling was enjoyed, and a demonstration was given on cake icing by Mrs. Dickinson,- Papatawa. Three new members were welcomed. Members Were called on for impromptu speeches, and some of the subjects caused much merriment. The competition was for a morning frock costing no more than ’ 5/-. Mrs. Hartridge proved the winner with Mrs. Weston Webb second. Arrangements' were made for the children’s Xmas party, to be held on Saturday. The president passed a vote of thanks to the' demonstrator.- Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Plimmerton. The last meeting of the year was held on Tuesday afternoon. Miss Amoore presiding. The hostesses served afternoon tea. Christmas gifts on axhiibtion and a roll call concluded the very pleasant afternoon. Makino. The December meeting of the Makino Women’s Institute took the form of a social afternoon, Mrs. J. Mason presiding. It was decided to have the Institute Christmas tree and the Makino school prize-giving on Tuesday evening, December 19. - Mrs. Kilvington kindly attended again to help those members who wished to complete, their raffia and cane baskets. The opening of the exchanged shilling parcels caused much merriment. The pointe prize for the best shilling’s worth was gained by Miss Oldfield, Mrs. Knight being second. The hostesses were Mesdames Huddleston, Christian, Fraser and Hayden, to whom a vote of thanks was accorded. The trading stall, under the management of Mesdames Stewart-Moray and Sherard was exceptionally successful. The January meeting will be held on January 9 when there will be two competitions ; one for an article made from a 501 b. flour bag. and the other for the best raffia and cane basket. Porirua. Mrs. Vickers presided at the November meeting of the Porirua Women’s Institute which was held in Prossers Hall. A demonstration in moccasin making was given by Mrs. Whetstone. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Hook and Findlater. Miss Maddever (president of the Southern federation) will lecture on Christmas cooking at the December meeting. Kaituna. The monthly,meeting of the Kaitunafernridge Women’s Institute was held in the hall. There was a good attendance, and several new members were enrolled. The competition for the Christmas cake made by Mrs. Shaw, Upper Plain, was won by Mrs. Jackson, Lansdowne. Mrs. A. Keir demonstrated papiermache work. The fat lamb donated by Mr. P. Welch toward the children's Christmas tree fund realised. £l/12/-. The hostesses were Mesdames de Lisle and Mulvaney and Misses N. Birch and R. Taylforth. Mangatainoka. There was a large attendance at the December meeting of the Mangatainoka Women’s Institute. Several visitors from Te Rehunga and Kohinui were welcomed. A sum of money is to be donated to the school library fund instead of having the usual party. A donation was also made to paint the kitchen at the library hall.

An interesting demonstration was given by Mrs. Goodwin, of Te Rehunga, who showed how to re-cover old shoes. The competition for the best iced Christmas cake was won by Mrs. Walter, with Mrs.

Howell second. The .competition for the best plate of sweets was won by Mrs. Kerrison, with Mrs. Howell second. The hostesses were Mesdames L. and A. Rusden and Miss Reid. Mangaweka. The Mangaweka Women’s Institute held its December meeting on Tuesday, when Mrs. Pairman presided over a good attendance. A silver spoon was presented to the first institute baby, little Anne Bramley. The competition, a Christmas gift costing not more than 1/6, was won by Mrs. H. Loye, with Mrs. Gardner and Mrs.' Williams second and third. Songs by Mrs. Kirkby and pianoforte solos by Miss Williams, Aramoho, were much enjoyed, and a book title competition was won by Mrs. Kirkby. Instead of the usual meeting, a picnic will be held on January 2, with novelty events and races for children of members, to take the place of a Christmas tree. It is also proposed to hold a garden party in Mrs. Pairman’s garden on Wednesday. January lffi
