OBITUARY

Mr. W. E. Bartley

The death occurred in Wellington recently of Mr. William Elisha Bartley, who had been a resident of New Zealand for more than 60 years. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Bartley, who was born in Ballarat, eventually settled in Wellington, where he was on the staff of Messrs. Townsend and Paul Ltd. for more than 30 years. On leaving that flrm he took up farming in Kaitieke, King Country, and later retired to Trentham. He is survived by bls widow, and two sons, Mr. F. R. Bartley, of Commerce Motors, and Mr. K. F. Bartley, of the Post and Telegraph Department. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Robertshaw. Mrs. L. Donald ' The death occurred at her residence, Te Ore Ore, Masterton, on Monday, of Mrs. L. Donald, at the age of 63 years, states a “Dominion” Special Service message. The late Mrs. Donald was born in Inverness, Scotland, and came to New Zealand at the age of 13 years. In 1902 she married Mh Lawrence Donald, who predeceased her about four years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Jean Donald, and three sons, Messrs. David, Lawrence and Malcolm Donald, all of Masterton. ■ Mr. James Pullar A cable message has been received In Wellington that Mr.. James Pullar, F.F.A., A.1.A.; F.S.S., for many , years general manager of the Colonial Mutual Life Insurance Society, Ltd., died suddenly in London on Saturday. Colonel A. J. Petherick The death has occurred' at Paraparaumu of a well-known Wellington citizen, in the person of Lieut.-Colonel Alfred John Petherick. He was the third son of the late Mr. E. W. Petherick, a Wellington pioneer, whose gifts were largely responsible for the establishment of the municipal museum in the Newtown Library building. The late Lieut.-Colonel Petherick, who was for many years in business in Wellington as a boot manufacturer in Sturdee Street, was very keen on soldiering in the old volunteering days, and advanced from gunner to be major of the D Battery, through sheer ability and enthusiasm. ' Subsequently he attained to the rank of lieut.-colonel. He was also an ardent yachtsman. Mr. Petherick, who was 66 years of age, will be accorded a military funeral this afternoon. The cortege will leave the Thorndon railway station for the Karori cemetery at 2.30 p.m. Old members of the D Battery are invited to attend.
