SURF WORK IN N.Z.
Placed on Proper Footing
bright outlook ahead
That surf work in the Dominion at long last had been placed on a definite footing, and that future prospects were more than bright, was the opinion expressed by Mr. P. Coira, president, in moving the adoption of the report at the first annual meeting of the New Zealand Surf Life-Saving Association on Thursday evening. Other members of the council present were: Messrs. S. Muller, N. A. Ingram, W. Gerrie, J. Millburn, and A. Ross. Mr. J. M. Braid, of the Foxton Surf Club, was welcomed to the meeting. The past year, said the president, had been a strenuous one in view of tlie remodelling of the constitution, and the revising of the form of drill. He congratulated the clubs on the keen interest they were displaying in the new drill, and felt sure that when the New Zealand championships were held in Auckland early in the New Year that the demonstrations by the various competing clubs would be of a high standard, despite the relatively short period allowed for the change over in the drill. He made special reference to the affiliation of tlie Canterbury Surf Association with the council. This was oue of the greatest steps forward that could have been accomplished. There now remained the consolidating of the interests of the individual surf clubs with their respective surf associations, and the whole organisation would progress rapidly. Appreciation of Progress. Mr. A. Ross stated that he had been instructed by the Taranaki District Surf Association to extend congratulations to the council on the progress made, and appreciation of the very valuable work done by the special subcommittee on revision. Mr. W. H. Gerrie said that tlie Wanganui Surf Association also desired to be associated with the congratulations to the council and the sub-committee on the result of the year’s operations. The work of the secretary of the council (Mr. F. Chapman) called for special notice. Messrs. S. Muller (Auckland), J. Millburn (Otago), and N. A. Ingram (Wellington) also congratulated tlie committee on the success of the revising of the rules of drill. National Surf Championships. It was decided that the national surf championships be held at Auckland in 1934, but no definite date was fixed pending the wishes of the Auckland association. On receipt of this matter the council will consider the position, and fix the date and beach on which tlie championships will be held. The council expressed pleasure at the decision of the Wellington Surf Association to hold a demonstration of tlie new drill on December 17, to afford the local board of judges an opportunity to study the finer points of the new drill. The local members of the council decided to attend the demonstration. Election of Officers, The election of officers resulted: —President, Mr. P. Coira; vice-president, Mr. IV. H. Gerrie; secretary-treasurer, Mr. F. Chapman; lion, instructor-in-chief, Mr. J. F. Alexander; hon. medical adviser, Dr. J. M. Thwigg; hon. solicitor, Mr, W. J. Beveridge: lion, auditor, Mr. P. Edwards; correspondence and publicity committee, jaesident, vice-president, and secretary. The council placed on record its appreciation of tlie excellent services rendered during the year by Mr. F.
