POSTER BALL HELD
Carnival Week Opening
NOVEL SCENE AND ITEMS
A dazzling array of posters, depicting every conceivable kind of product, were fitting decorations for the grand poster ball held in the Town Hall last evening for the Community Services Prin cess, Miss Phyllis Oliver. There was a splendid attendance, the organisation was complete in every detail, and the committee had worked perfectly together to achieve the successful result. Besides prizes for the best fancy dress posters, several firms had donat ed special prizes for the best advertisement of their product. A special feature of the ball was the "Midnight Ballet,” arranged by Miss Phyllis Oliver. A, few minutes before midnight the lights were extinguished, and a single green spot-light showed a brotesque figure, the "Spirit of the Slump,” slowly lowered on to the stage. Then suddenly the "Sun of Prosperity came dazzling over the horizon, and the "Spirit of the Carnival,” Miss Oliver herself, came bursting through the Sun Slump disappeared and a delightful ballet of carnival sprites in gay costume took his place. At this point hundreds of balloons and streamers were floated from the gallery into the hall, and the Confidence Carnival began in the very best spirit. Another attractive ballet, also arranged by Miss Oliver, consisted, of girls dressed in short black and silver costumes with long silk stockings.
A song and dance scena was presented by Miss Kath Nickels and Mr. Frank Tozer and their pupils, when an original New Zealand song was introduced with special orchestral accompaniment. The four Princesses were present, and were introduced to the gathering by Mr. G. G. Stewart. Messrs. De Fan, O’Shea, and H. F. Wood were capable M.C.’s.
The ball was organised by a special committee set up by the Advertising Club, in conjunction with the Community Services Princess committee. The chairman of both committees was Mr Wemyss. Those in charge of the grand parade of poster costumes were Messrs P. Lawlor, Westropp, B. Quinton, and Harvey, and the judges were Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Stewart, Miss Phyllis Oliver, and Mr. Wauchop.
Mr. Montague E. Nolan, with a number of helpers, was in charge of the door, and the excellent lighting effects were arranged by Mr. Laughron.
