Wellington Branch Meets

review of activities

In the ‘unavoidable absence of Lady Buckleton, the president, Lady Luke presided at the annual social meeting and book and magazine tea held by the Wellington branch of the I ictona League at the Pioneer Club yesterday afternoon, when there was a splendid attendance. The annual report was read by Miss W. Thompson, hou. secretary. , It was stated that the number of members was now ISO, fifteen haying joined during the year. Committee letters had included letters of welcome to visitors and settlers; letters to the branches in connection with people who wished to return to New Zealand, friendly letters to settlers; and correspondence regarding settlers about whom .people at Home were anxious. Friendly visits had also been exchanged- in this connection. Mrs. Pow, social service representative of the League’s Women’s Hospital Auxiliary, had reported visits paid by members to lonely, patients; gifts of flowers, fruit, magazines, small cakes, sweets and cigarettes distributed; and a Victoria League stall for the Y.W.C.A., street day, when £2O was collected. 1 Miss A. Kane, -the league’s representative, was lion, secretary of the women’s unemployment committee. The New Zealand branches had a wreath made in London and placed on the Cenotaph in loving memory of our men who died in the Great War. The usual donation had been sent Home for the Empire Day wreath for Queen Victoria s statue. n , Twenty members had been given letters of introduction to the London headquarters and to the branches in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. and much kindness and hospitality had been extended to them. Teas had been given for distinguished visitors, and the league had been joint hostesses with several other societies at a reception for the British public school boys who toured New Zealand this year. Through ■ the medium of two very successful teas reading mat- ' ter had been collected and sent for winter reading and in time for Christmas, among the recipients being backblock settlers, boys on farms, Maori schools, invalids, hospitals, the Sailors’ Society, homes pud institutions, relief camps, public workers’ settlements, and the Cook and Niue Islands. Mrs. L. O. 11. Tripp and Mrs. M. H. Chatfield, J.P.. were the New Zealand delegates to the annual meeting of the league in London. The branch tendered its grateful thanks for the practical interest shown by their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe by tbeir gifts of hooks for distribution. Thanks were also given to Mrs. MacKenzie and Mrs. Chapman for flowers for social teas, and to Mrs. Ivan Levy for providing music for their entertainment: to Mrs. Smith for collecting subscriptions; and to the Press. The president and committee most particularly thanked Miss Thompson for her work as secretary. The election of officers was as follows, all being re-elected, with the addition of Miss Forsyth to the committee: President, Lady Buckleton, 0.8. E.; vice-presidents, Lady Luke, 0.8. E., Mrs. Chatfield, J.P.; council and committee, Sir James Coates, Hon. Dr. Collins, Mr. and Mrs. L. O. IL Tripp, Mr. Haywood Mirams, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, Mesdames C. Corrigan, Corliss, MacKenzie, Chapman, Doctor, Larnach, Meadows, Pow, Meadowcroft, Paish, Robertson, Ferrish, Watson, Yaldwyn, Warburton; executive committee, Lady Buckleton, Mesdames MacKenzie, Pow, Doctor and Warburton; hon. treasurer, Miss A. Kane; hon. secretary, Miss V. Thompson; hostesses’ list, Mesdames Corrigan (senr.), Blaxali, Clayton, Hurst, Lyon, 11. Kirkealdie, Davidson, Porteous, Sievwright and Madame Merlin. An excellent tea was handed round, after which there'were songs by Miss Ngaire Coster, accompanied by Mrs. Ivan Levy, and Mrs. Goodson, with Miss Pat Goodson accompanying her mother. ■ Mrs. Chatfield gave a most interesting account of the London meeting.
