An impressive scene was witnessed at Lourdes with 10,000 war veterans praying before the Grotto of the Virgin at a pilgrimage organised by priests who had ministered to the soldiers in war-time. Some were seathless. merely fulfilling battlefield vows, but the majority were sufferers from gas and shell-shock. Some were beyond any aid. The Archbishop of Lille celebrated a Pontifical Mass in the open air.
