Annual Meeting Held

At the annual meeting of the “Cercle litteraire francais” the following officers and committee were elected:— Patron, Monsieur Edouard Joubart (Consul for France, resident in Auckland) ; president, Mr. F. F. Miles; vicepresidents, Madame O. R. Bendall, Monsieur F. M. Bouillet, Professor Boyd-Wilson; secretary, Madame J. de Filippi; assistant-secretary, Miss Allison Mackay; treasurer, Miss C. Mead; librarian, Mrs. M. H. Green; auditor, Mr. M. S. B. Clarke; general committee, Madame Dechanet-Mclntosh, Madame Young, Madame R. Finlayson, Mademoiselle Bordreau, Miss F. Huntington, Dr. Carbery and Mr. Balham. Tim president said that the club had good reason to believe that the tide had turned, and that the financial position was quite satisfactory. Many thanks were due to those visiting artists and friends of members who had contributed materially to the excellence of the entertainments. Madame 0. R. Bendall was congratulated on her decoration from Paris and warmly

thanked for her able direction of the conversation class. Monsieur Bouillet (as author of bright and witty sketches), Madame de Filippi and Miss A. Mackay (secretaries), Mrs. Green (librarian), and Miss C. Mead (treasurer), were also thanked for their work. I Reference was made to the death of two esteemed members, Mrs. Smythson and Mrs. Marshall, to the departure for Australia of two active members, Dr. I. Henning and Miss Teusley, and to the recent arrival from their studies in France of Miss Pope, Miss Mary Hursthouse and Dr. Keys. Music occupied the latter portion of the evening, the performers being Miss Elvira Witeherby (’cello) and Miss Ormi Reid (piano), who played “Variation Symphonique” (Boellman) and “Chant du soir” (.Schumann). Miss Ormi Reid also played a brilliant “Etude de Chopin,” and as an encore “Arabesque” (Debussy). Mrs. G. Ellwood organised the musical programme. A repeat performance of Monsieur Bouillet’s little sketch, “Illusions.” written especially for the club, was given, the parts being played by Mr. Balham, Mrs. E. Lash, and Miss Gibson. Madame Bendall acted as hostess. Supper was served under the direction of Miss I. Smythson and Madame de Filippi.
