SEASON OPENED

Port Nicholson Yacht Club VALUE OF AQUATIC SPORT Many yachtsmen and their friends were present fit the opening of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s 1933-34 season by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, on Saturday afternoon. The Mayor said that of the many forms of sporting activity, he knew of none that created a better feeling of good fellowship than yachting and its kindred sports. Mr. N. Blair, club commodore, in welcoming yachtsmen and their friends to the opening of the 51st season of the club, said, that last season had been exceptionally successful, and it was hoped that the coming one would be even more successful. He was pleased to see many representatives present from kindred yachting clubs. The Mayor, Mr. T. 0. A. Hislop, said he was very glad again to have the opportunity of meeting members of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. The last occasion was when he had the privilege of meeting members at a function during the term of oflice of Ex-Com-modore W. Duncan, who, be believed, had the unique record of occupying that office over a period of no less than thirteen years. The club, the Mayor said, had recently celebrated the 50th year of its existence, and throughout the whole of that time it had shown a steady advance, and had. kept up with the times in a. yachting sense. It had taken part in many contests in New Zealand, and in’Wellington had an exceedingly creditable record. One often heard that Wellington was not a good place for sailing. Ho did not know very much about that, but if Wellington was a difficult place for sailing, at any rate it- had. created yachtsmen second to none in seamanship in New Zealand. The club, he continued, had had a year of no little difficulty, but it had been able to carry on, and at the commencement of the present season, finding itself in a sound position, he-had no doubt would be able to continue satisfactorily. He wished the club all success, and had pleasure in declaring the season open. Captain W. J. Keane, chairman of the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Mo-tor-boat Association, and commodore of the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club, extended to the club the association’s wishes for a very successful season. On the association, he said, was a very fine body of men, who had the interest of the sport at heart. Mr. W. Glnders, Parcmata Boating Club; Mr. A. E. Burd, Plimmerton Boating Club; and Mr. J. King, Worsen Bay Boating Club, also spoke. Opportunity was taken to present the Cup to Miss Ngaire Williams, who had sailed W’airere I to victory for the second time in the annual ladies’ race. Afternoon tea was served to those present in the clubhouse.
