The Conservative Party, under Mr. Tolmie. was elected by a large majority in 1928. Mr. Tolmie, a year ago, declared for Union Government, but failed to get .substantial support from the Liberals or dissatisfied Conservatives. Many Conservatives have joined tlie new Independent Non-Partisan movement, which favours Union Government, but is opposed to the Tolmie Administration. Tlie Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, commonly called the C.C.F., is a new political party which favours the gradual socialisation of finance and public utilities. Mr. Tolmie is running only thirteen official supporters, but a large number of Independents hold themselves free to decide on affiliation after the election. Mr. Tolmie declares that after the election lie will consult members who favour a Union Government. The Conservative Party, as an organisation, is not officially represented, though four candidates are offering under the Conservative name in the postponed elections. The Liberals, under the leadership of Mr. T. D. Patnllo. are thus elected to power. Tlie Premier, Mr. S. F. Tolmie, was personally defeated.
