QUAKER ON A STAMP.

The United States had just issued a stamp bearing the portrait of William Penn to commemorate the 2oOth anniversary of his landing in America. American’s have a particulars affection for the founder of Pennsylvania, which has occasionally taken rather curious forms. Just fifty yers ago, for instance, a Philapelphia merchant made an offer to tlie Society of Fiends for the bodies qt Penn, his first and second wives, and his nine children, all of whom are buried at Jordans, Buckinghamshire. He wanted to have them exhumed and reburied in Pennsylvania, and was prepared to pay cash. Naturally, the offer was refused, but the would-be purchaser was so indignant about it that he went home and published a large volume to expose the unreasonableness of the English Quakers. The philatelic tribute, however, is a graceful one. It is particularly interesting as probably the first postage-stamp to bear the portrait of a Quaker.
