SUPPORT FOR SCHEME

Reduction in Street Days

CITY COUNCILLOR’S VIEW

“I heartily agree with the proposal made by Lieut.-Uolonel A. Cowles in regard to street days,” said Cr. IV. Duneau yesterday to a “Dominion” reporter. “For a long time I have been waiting for someone to come along with an idea that would do away altogether with those street days, which not only embarrass the public, but interfere with trade in the city. “From time to time I have raised my voice against this method of raising money for charity. At one time every organisation concerned wanted to have its street day on a Friday, and some of them used to be allowed to set up stall?, often selling goods of the same kind that arc for sale in the shops nearby. That was scarcely fair and the council agreed not, to allow street days to be held on Fridays for the future, as that was the big shopping day of the week.” Mr. Duncan believes, with Lieut.Colonel Cowles, that by holding certain combined aptieals, and by the organisations concerned concentrating all their energies on tdieir day would obtain just as satisfactory a result in the long run. , In respect to Lleut.-Colonel Cowles s proposal, as outlined in yesterday’s “Dominion,” that siteaker, while critical of the system, was most appreciative of the self-sacrificing services rendered by the woman collectors in fair weather and foul. for the worthy objects to be served. He could not give them too much praise lor the energy and enthusiasm with which they have carried on their valuable work, not always a very pleasant task. He states that it was in his mind to say that it was almost too much to ask them, however willing they may be. to carry ou from 9 a.m., to 6 pan. on cold winter days. Indeed, he had that in view when he was thinking that a change of system might be advisable.
